Long and thin stiletto heels were named after the stiletto dagger. The word “stiletto” was first recorded back in 1930 and refers to the style of the heel itself. Stiletto heels range in length from 1 inch to over eight inches, the longer ones being used in conjunction with a platform sole. Some stiletto heels have a ground-level diameter of only one centimeter.

Stiletto heels that measure less than 5 centimeters are called “Kitten” heels. A heel must be more than simply long and slender to meet the stiletto classification. In fact, the stiletto heels of the 1960s had a diameter of no more than 5 millimeters for much of their lengths! They actually had to be flared out at the base in order to provide some degree of balance. It was also in the early 60s when the toes of many stiletto-type shoes were elongated and made pointier in order to match the design style of the heels.

Stiletto heels are commonly looked upon as a fetish item – demonstrating a high level of sex appeal. Besides increasing height, they also accentuate the muscles in the total leg region. When a women puts on her stiletto heels, she is making a loud statement that she demands to be noticed. She is showing her confidence and her willingness to stand out in any crowd. Stilettos heels continue to gain popularity worldwide as a symbol of fashion, flare – and fetish.
